Raphael Sanzio
The Renaissance was an era full of art, language, and learning. Throughout the Renaissance came amazing people. One of these people was Raphael Sanzio, (some of the younger people may know him as Raphael the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle!) also known as Raffaello Sanzio. Raphael was an amazing painter and architect.
Raphael was born in Urbino, Italy, on April 6th, 1483. Raphael grew up in a wealthy merchant family. He was raised by his mother and father until they died when he was young. His mom, Magia di Battista di Nicola Clara, died when he was eight years old. In 1482, Giovanni Sanzio was remarried to Bernardina, daughter of a gold smith. His father, Giovanni Sanzio, was a painter and a poet. He died when Raphael was eleven. Raphael had two siblings, but they died when they were infants.
Raphael’s father Giovanni, taught him everything he knew. In 1504, Raphael decided to move from Urbino to Florence. While in Florence, Raphael painted The Three Graces from 1504 to 1505. In 1505 to 1506 Raphael painted St. George and the Dragon.
In 1508, an amazing thing happened to Raphael. He was summoned by Pope Julius II to paint a series of paintings in the papal apartments, so Raphael left for Rome. While in Rome he painted Stanza della Segnatura (from about 1508 to 1511.) Later, on April 6th (the same day he was born) of 1520 Raphael passed away. For almost 500 years Raphae has been known as one of the greatest painters in the world; people still admire Raphael’s work to this day.
